Hisn Al-Mateen Bloc rejects the “illusion” of a Kabyle independence declaration made from Paris

On the illusion of the “Kabyle Independence Declaration” and external exploitation of the Amazigh identity.
Hisn Al-Mateen Bloc is closely monitoring the symbolic actions of the MAK movement, classified as a terrorist organization domestically, which announced its intention to issue the so-called “Kabyle Independence Declaration” on 14 December 2025 from Paris, France.
The Bloc affirms that this move carries no political or popular weight within Algeria. Rather, it is part of a series of isolated media attempts aimed at creating a false legitimacy for a separatist project that has long lost its field and legal foundations.
1. A movement crumbling from within
Various reports and testimonies indicate that the MAK organization is experiencing internal collapse, reflected in:
- Sharp internal conflicts and divisions within its leadership.
- Near-total loss of popular support in the Kabylia region.
- A clear weakness in its political project and its failure to gain any local backing.
The Paris declaration represents nothing more than a desperate attempt to advance after widespread popular rejection of any separatist adventure that would undermine national stability.
2. A question exposing the project’s true nature
How can the MAK leadership announce what it calls the “Kabyle Independence” from Paris—the capital of the state that colonized Algeria for 130 years—while the people of Kabylia made the greatest sacrifices in that very struggle?
This contradiction clearly shows that:
- The project is designed outside the country’s borders.
- It is directed using tools unrelated to the region’s identity or its historical struggle.
- It disrespects the memory of martyrs who defended a united and independent Algeria.
3. A hostile external axis against Algeria’s unity
The Bloc warns of external actors seeking to exploit any internal tensions to pressure Algeria on its strategic issues, including Palestine and Western Sahara. Indicators point to activities by:
- French circles with a known colonial legacy.
- The Moroccan regime attempting to challenge Algeria’s firm stance on Western Sahara.
- The Israeli entity using minority issues as a tool for political intrusion.
This external support does not reflect internal will or popular legitimacy.
4. Amazigh identity—a unifying, not divisive, force
The Bloc emphasizes that the Amazigh identity is an integral component of the national identity, and that Kabyles and Southern Amazighs constitute a key pillar of the Algerian state’s strength, far from any separatist exploitation or external manipulation.
In communications with Bloc members, President Djelloul Chetouane stressed: “The Amazigh identity does not belong to the MAK or any faction; it belongs to all Algerians… and will never be used as a tool for secession or foreign leverage.”
Artists, local leaders, and civil society actors confirm that the overwhelming majority of the region’s population rejects any political exploitation of identity.
Position of Hisn Al-Mateen Bloc
The Bloc hereby declares:
1. A categorical rejection of all separatist projects, particularly the MAK movement, classified as a terrorist organization since 2021.
2. A warning against external interventions targeting Algeria’s stability and unity.
3. A firm commitment to national territorial unity and rejection of turning cultural demands into divisionist projects.
4. Support for national dialogue on equitable development and cultural diversity within the framework of the national state.
Conclusion
Hisn Al-Mateen Bloc, under the leadership of Mr Djelloul Chetouane, emphasizes that a conscious and cohesive civil society is the first line of defense for national unity. Protecting the Amazigh identity is part of protecting the Algerian state itself.
The Bloc calls on national media to handle this issue responsibly, exposing separatist projects without amplifying them, and promoting discussion on balanced development and linguistic and cultural justice.
“The Amazigh identity is a strength for Algeria… Kabylia is the heart of the nation… and Southern Amazighs are the support of its history and unity.”
